Why Ooredoo Tunisia Invested in a New Subsea Cable

Ooredoo Tunisia has recently deployed a new subsea cable, a strategic move driven by the increasing demand for data and the upcoming launch of 5G services in the country. This investment addresses the critical need for enhanced capacity and network redundancy, ensuring a robust and reliable internet infrastructure for Tunisian consumers and businesses. The reasons behind this significant infrastructure upgrade were discussed by Hatem Mestiri, CTIO of Ooredoo Tunisia, on the DigiClub podcast powered by Huawei and BacPay.

# Addressing Capacity Needs and Diversifying Routes

Mestiri explained that Ooredoo Tunisia could no longer rely solely on the Didon cable, which it co-manages with Orange Tunisia and connects Tunisia to Sicily. Furthermore, the operator aimed to diversify its international routes to avoid over-dependence on the incumbent operator’s alternatives, such as the Sea-Me-We 4 cable between Marseille and Bizerte. The decision to deploy a new cable was also influenced by delays in the Medusa cable project. According to Mestiri, waiting for the Medusa cable to become operational would have prevented Ooredoo from effectively managing the anticipated surge in data traffic resulting from the introduction of 5G technology.

In conclusion, the deployment of this new subsea cable is a proactive measure by Ooredoo Tunisia to ensure sufficient capacity and network resilience in anticipation of the 5G era. By investing in its own infrastructure, Ooredoo aims to provide seamless connectivity and support the growing data consumption demands of the Tunisian market. This move is essential for enabling the successful commercial launch of 5G in February, guaranteeing a superior user experience and fostering innovation in the digital landscape.
