Niger Achieves Key Milestone in Broadband Connectivity with Over 1,000 Kilometers of Fiber Optic Cable

On November 14, 2025, Niger marked a significant step forward in its digital transformation journey with the provisional acceptance of fiber optic sections completed under the Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic Backbone Project (DTS). Financed by the African Development Bank Group, this achievement promises to dramatically improve high-speed internet connectivity across the nation and bolster regional digital integration.

Strengthening Niger’s Digital Infrastructure

A formal ceremony in Niamey celebrated the accomplishment, attended by key figures including the Minister of Communication and New Information Technologies, Adji Ali Salatou, the Head of the African Development Bank Group’s country office in Niger, Mamadou Tangara, the DTS Project Coordinator, Abdoulkarim Soumaila, and the Director-General of Niger Telecoms, Idrissa Djibo Maïga. Representatives from participating companies and stakeholders involved in the project’s execution were also present. The DTS project, with an estimated cost of 43 million euros financed by the African Development Fund, aims to create a robust digital infrastructure, facilitating faster and more reliable internet access for businesses and individuals throughout Niger.

This infrastructure upgrade is poised to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, education, and access to information, positioning Niger as a more competitive player in the digital age. The expanded fiber optic network will not only enhance domestic connectivity but also contribute to broader regional integration efforts, fostering collaboration and innovation across the continent.
