France Launches SkyFortress Experiment to Bolster Space Operations Resilience
France is taking proactive steps to safeguard its space infrastructure with the launch of the SkyFortress experiment. Spearheaded by the French Defence Innovation Agency in collaboration with Skynopy, this initiative seeks to develop a more resilient approach to ground segment operations, recognizing the increasing strategic importance of space-based assets for national sovereignty. The urgency of this project was underscored by the vulnerabilities exposed in European ground stations during the initial stages of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, highlighting the critical need for continuous and secure access to satellites.
SkyFortress: Hybrid Ground Station Network
The SkyFortress project, awarded to Skynopy as part of an innovation acceleration program, focuses on experimenting with the hybridization of a network of ground stations. The goal is to assess the robustness and responsiveness of this hybrid network under operational conditions. Ground stations play a vital role in controlling satellites, transmitting data, and ensuring continuous communication between satellites in orbit and terrestrial systems. The experiment aims to determine how these ground stations can be optimized for superior space operations.
This strategic move aims to equip the French armed forces with an enhanced capability or alternative solution, increasing the security of their space operations. By enhancing the resilience of ground segment operations, France is solidifying its ability to maintain critical space-based services, reinforcing its strategic autonomy in an increasingly contested space environment.
