Algeria’s Energy Sector Expands: Sonelgaz Acquires ENEL Azazga for International Growth
In a significant move poised to bolster Algeria’s industrial prowess and energy ambitions, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, recently announced the acquisition of Electro-industries (ENEL) d’Azazga by the Sonelgaz group. This strategic takeover sees Sonelgaz absorbing a company renowned for its specialization in the manufacturing and commercialization of distribution transformers and electric motors, crucial components for energy infrastructure. The announcement, made during a working visit to Tizi-Ouzou, signals a pivotal moment for both entities and Algeria’s broader energy strategy.
Strategic Vision and African Market Expansion
The decision for this acquisition was initiated three months prior by public authorities, following a direct proposal from the Sonelgaz group itself. This forward-looking move will see Sonelgaz assume 100% ownership of ENEL Azazga, with the full integration set to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. According to Minister Adjal, this integration is “opportune” and aligns perfectly with the strategic vision of the public authorities concerning energy. The overarching goal is ambitious: to penetrate and conquer international markets, with a particular emphasis on the burgeoning African continent. Algeria is already making headway in this regard, having secured market agreements with Mauritania and Nigeria, while actively pursuing discussions for new ventures in Senegal. The Minister also took the opportunity to commend the impressive performance and achievements of ENEL, recognizing its vital role in contributing to Algeria’s industrial landscape.
This acquisition solidifies Sonelgaz’s position as a major industrial player, enhancing its capabilities in producing essential electrical components domestically. By bringing ENEL Azazga’s expertise in transformers and electric motors under its wing, Sonelgaz is not only securing its supply chain but also gearing up to become a key exporter of Made-in-Algeria energy technology across Africa. This expansion reflects a clear national strategy to leverage local industrial strengths for broader economic influence and technological leadership within the African energy sector.
