Microsoft Launches Inclusive AI Project in Kenya: Project Gecko

Microsoft has unveiled Project Gecko, an ambitious artificial intelligence initiative designed to improve AI’s functionality and accessibility for underrepresented communities, starting with Kenya and India. This project represents a significant step towards developing AI systems that genuinely understand and respond to the unique linguistic, cultural, and practical needs of communities often overlooked in technological advancements. The initiative is being spearheaded by Microsoft Research Africa in Nairobi, in collaboration with other Microsoft research arms, Digital Green, and various academic and philanthropic partners.

Building AI for the Underserved: The Goals of Project Gecko

The core objective of Project Gecko is to create AI tools that are not only effective but also customizable and affordable. These tools will utilize text, speech, and video to function effectively even in regions with limited internet bandwidth, a crucial consideration for many parts of Kenya and other African nations. The initiative aims to build AI models capable of recognizing local languages and understanding the specific contexts and conditions of the communities they serve. For example, researchers like Stephanie Nyairo are working with Kenyan collaborators to test the accuracy of speech models, particularly in understanding the questions farmers pose. This focus on local relevance and practical application is central to the project’s success.
