Aïn Oussara Power Plant: Sonelgaz Prioritizes Algerian Expertise to Complete Project
Algeria is making strides in bolstering its energy production capabilities with the Aïn Oussara power plant project. Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, recently announced that two phases of the power plant project in Aïn Oussara are slated to become operational in 2026, significantly enhancing the nation’s electricity generation capacity.
Sonelgaz’s Roadmap for Algerian Expertise
During a site visit, Minister Adjal highlighted the strategic importance of the plant, stating that it will join six similar major facilities across the country. The phased commissioning of the two sections, planned for the first and second halves of next year respectively, will initially provide a capacity of 500 megawatts. The plant will employ advanced technology and is projected to reach a total capacity of 1200 MW using a combined cycle (gas and steam) system upon its final completion in 2027. Crucially, Sonelgaz has developed a roadmap emphasizing the use of Algerian expertise from both public and private sector companies to complete the project, fostering local skills and promoting indigenous technological advancement in the energy sector.
The Aïn Oussara power plant represents a significant investment in Algeria’s energy infrastructure. By prioritizing local expertise, Sonelgaz aims to not only complete the project efficiently but also to empower Algerian companies and professionals in the energy sector, contributing to sustainable development and economic growth.
