ANF Initiates National Framework for Satellite Connectivity on the Move: Revolutionizing Transportation

The Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANF), Tunisia’s national frequencies agency, recently hosted its third annual conference, “Spectrum and Technological Trends,” focusing on Earth Stations In Motion (ESIM). This year’s conference in Tunis highlighted the burgeoning importance of ESIM technology, which enables internet connectivity via satellite for airplanes, ships, and trains. As connectivity becomes an increasingly crucial element of modern transportation, the ANF is taking steps to establish a national framework to support this evolving technology.

ESIM: Meeting the Demands of the Modern Traveler

ESIM technology, distinct from the eSIM found in smartphones, refers to onboard terminals that provide stable internet connections even while in motion, filling the gaps where terrestrial networks fall short. According to Olfa Jammeli Jbal, Director General of the ANF, this service is rapidly transitioning from a luxury to a necessity for passengers. “Today, passengers are actively seeking connectivity options. The availability of internet access is no longer an additional service; it’s an expectation,” she stated, emphasizing the shifting priorities of modern travelers. This initiative by the ANF is crucial for enabling better connectivity in Tunisia and setting a precedent for other African nations to follow.

The ANF’s efforts to establish a national framework for ESIM technology signal a significant step towards modernizing transportation infrastructure in Tunisia and potentially across the African continent. By addressing the growing demand for connectivity on the move, the ANF is paving the way for enhanced passenger experiences and improved operational efficiency across various transportation sectors.
