UNIDO Initiative Modernizes Rice Processing in Ghana
A recent partnership is set to significantly uplift rice processing standards in the Ahafo Ano North Municipality of Ghana. The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in collaboration with the Japanese government and Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), has launched an initiative focused on improving technology and quality control within the rice value chain. This project, aptly named “Improving Technology and Quality Control System for Higher Value Addition in the Post-harvest Processes of the Rice Value Chain (ITEQ-RICE),” aims to enhance food safety and boost incomes for local rice farmers.
Modernizing Rice Mills for Enhanced Quality
As part of the ITEQ-RICE initiative, six rice millers in Tepa have received a substantial upgrade to their operations. Following a thorough needs assessment, UNIDO provided targeted training and crucial equipment to these beneficiaries. The equipment package included three advanced rice milling machines, three destoners, six grading and sorting machines, three electric motors, and three elevators. This technological infusion will empower the millers to produce higher-quality rice, meeting stringent food safety standards and ultimately increasing their profitability within the competitive market. A follow-up inspection involving the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) confirms the project’s positive impact.
The ITEQ-RICE project exemplifies the power of international collaboration in fostering sustainable agricultural development and economic empowerment within African communities. By equipping local rice millers with modern technology and enhancing their capacity for quality control, UNIDO, Japan, and MoFA are contributing to a more resilient and prosperous rice value chain in Ghana.
