NLC Gears Up for “Mother of All Protests” Against Moove Africa Over Alleged Anti-Labor Practices
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, is preparing for a large-scale protest against Moove Africa, an e-mobility and vehicle financing company operating in the region. According to letters penned by the Chairperson of the Lagos State NLC, Comrade Funmi Sessi, and addressed to key state officials including the Commissioner of Police, Director of the DSS, and Commissioner of Transportation, the demonstration aims to address alleged unfair labor practices impacting Moove’s drivers.
Drivers Face Increased Remittance Burden
The core of the NLC’s grievance stems from Moove Africa’s decision to implement a 100% increase in remittance fees for drivers participating in the company’s drive-to-own program. Comrade Sessi emphasized that this significant hike is causing “untold hardships” for the drivers. Despite attempts to initiate dialogue and resolve the issue amicably, Moove Africa has reportedly remained unresponsive, prompting the NLC to escalate the matter through this planned protest, which they’ve dubbed the “Mother of All Protests.” The protest is slated to take place directly at Moove Africa’s office.
The planned protest underscores the growing concerns surrounding labor practices within Africa’s burgeoning tech and e-mobility sectors. As these industries expand, ensuring fair treatment and reasonable working conditions for drivers and other gig economy workers remains a critical challenge for both companies and regulatory bodies.
