Globacom Strengthens Hold on Second Place with Major Tower Network Expansion in Nigeria

Globacom is strategically reinforcing its position as Nigeria’s second-largest tower operator, significantly expanding its infrastructure across the nation. Latest industry data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reveals that Globacom’s tower assets have grown to 8,773.6 in 2024, a notable increase from 8,550 in 2023. This robust expansion underscores the company’s profound commitment to infrastructure investment, aiming to elevate network quality, broaden coverage, and maintain a strong competitive edge in Africa’s dynamic telecommunications market. This move is crucial as the demand for reliable connectivity continues to surge across Nigeria.

A Unique Infrastructure Strategy in Nigeria’s Telecom Landscape

Globacom distinguishes itself within the Nigerian telecom sector by being the sole mobile network operator (MNO) that fully owns and manages all its tower assets directly. This integrated approach contrasts sharply with industry giants like MTN Nigeria, the country’s leading telecom provider, which holds only about 1% of its tower infrastructure. MTN heavily relies on independent tower companies (TowerCos) such as IHS Towers and American Tower Corporation (ATC) to fulfill its extensive network requirements. According to the NCC’s 2024 annual report, Nigeria’s entire telecoms industry comprised 39,880 towers as of December 2024. Of this total, MNOs collectively owned 9,283 towers, while TowerCos controlled the vast majority, approximately 30,597. Globacom’s strategy of direct ownership provides it with unique control over its network resilience and expansion capabilities, critical for sustained growth and operational efficiency in a challenging yet lucrative market.

This substantial investment in its core infrastructure highlights Globacom’s long-term vision for sustainable growth and enhanced customer experience. By expanding its tower footprint and maintaining direct control, Globacom is not just chasing market share but also ensuring a robust and reliable network foundation for millions of Nigerians. This strategic decision positions Globacom effectively to navigate future technological advancements and meet the evolving demands of its subscriber base, cementing its critical role in the country’s digital transformation journey.
