Tunisia: Mandatory Cash Registers for Restaurants and Cafés Starting This Saturday
The Tunisian General Directorate of Taxes (DGI) has announced that starting this Saturday, November 1st, 2025, specific businesses will be required to utilize certified cash registers. This directive, outlined in an official decree published on October 14th in the Official Journal (JORT n°125), signifies the initiation of a nationwide digital sales traceability system. This move is part of Tunisia’s efforts to modernize its financial infrastructure, aligning with broader African trends in embracing technology for enhanced governance and tax collection.
First Phase of Implementation: Focus on Tourism and Hospitality
The initial phase of this mandatory cash register requirement targets corporate entities operating classified tourist restaurants, tea rooms, and second and third-category cafés. The implemented devices must comply with the specifications set by the DGI and are exclusively available from authorized providers. A comprehensive list of approved vendors is accessible on the online platform jibaya.tn. Crucially, all sales data will be transmitted in real-time to a central platform managed by the Ministry of Finance’s Informatics Center (CIMF). This digital reporting will allow for improved monitoring of economic activity and streamline tax assessment processes, which is a common strategy being adopted across the African continent to combat tax evasion and enhance government revenue.

Phased Rollout Planned Until 2028
The deployment of this new system will occur in four phases, with the initial enforcement starting on November 1st, 2025. This progressive approach allows businesses to adapt and ensures a smoother transition to the new digital framework.
