Bolt, Uber, and inDrive’s Fare Control Challenged by Nigerian Drivers’ Union
The ongoing dispute over fare determination in the e-hailing industry continues in Nigeria, with the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) asserting that ride-hailing giants like Bolt, inDrive, and Uber do not possess the authority to unilaterally set fares on their platforms. This stance comes as drivers increasingly seek greater control over their earnings and push back against company policies they deem unfair.
Drivers’ Union Rejects E-hailing Companies’ Authority
AUATON’s position, articulated by National Spokesperson Comrade Jossy Adaraniwon in a statement to Technext, is a direct response to recent actions taken by one of the e-hailing companies against drivers attempting to adjust fares. This follows a decision by drivers in Port Harcourt to increase their fares by 50%, a move that Bolt deemed unauthorized and in violation of its operational guidelines. Bolt argued that its “price bidding” feature already allows drivers to propose fares based on rider willingness to pay, ensuring a transparent pricing system for both parties. However, AUATON’s statement suggests this feature is not sufficient in addressing drivers’ concerns regarding fair compensation and the rising costs of operation. The union is advocating for drivers to have a more significant voice in determining the rates they charge.
The conflict highlights the power dynamics within the e-hailing ecosystem in Nigeria, raising questions about the extent to which these platforms can dictate pricing while drivers bear the brunt of operational costs and economic fluctuations. The debate is likely to continue as AUATON champions the cause for greater driver autonomy and a fairer share of the revenue generated through these popular ride-hailing apps.
