Sun King Inaugurates Nairobi Manufacturing Plant, Boosting Local Production

Sun King, a leading provider of off-grid solar energy solutions in sub-Saharan Africa, has launched its inaugural large-scale manufacturing plant in Nairobi, Kenya. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to localizing production and enhancing its reach across the continent. The establishment of this facility represents a significant investment in Kenya’s burgeoning clean energy sector.

A Hub for Solar-Powered Innovation

The Nairobi plant will focus on assembling solar-powered televisions and smartphones, specifically designed for optimal performance with Sun King’s existing off-grid solar systems. With an initial production capacity of 700,000 units annually, the facility is poised for expansion to meet increasing demand. T. Patrick Walsh, Sun King’s co-founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of this venture, stating that it will “allow us to harness Africa’s talent and ingenuity while delivering affordable, high-quality products.”

This development mirrors a broader trend of clean energy companies investing directly in African manufacturing. As demand for affordable solar power and electric mobility solutions continues to surge, companies like Sun King, alongside electric motorcycle companies, are increasingly drawn to establishing a stronger presence closer to their customer base within the continent. The Nairobi plant represents a key step towards greater energy independence and technological empowerment for the region.
