Moove Drivers Faced Trial for Threat to Life, Property, Investigation Reveals
An investigation by Technext has uncovered that Moove drivers, previously alleged to have been wrongfully arrested for protesting a price increase, were actually prosecuted for threatening life and property. This revelation contradicts claims made by the Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON).
Details of the Arrest and Prosecution
AUATON, led by state council chairman Comrade Jaiyesimi Azeez, had petitioned that Moove officials orchestrated the unlawful arrest and detention of drivers Moses Ameh and Byang Zakka for opposing a company price hike announcement. The union further alleged that the drivers were apprehended by officers from the Bar Beach police station under Moove’s instruction. According to AUATON, Ameh and Zakka were tortured, forced to sign pre-prepared statements, and subsequently held at the Ikoyi correctional centre for a month. However, the Technext investigation suggests the legal proceedings stemmed from a more serious accusation than simply protesting a price adjustment.
The investigation’s findings bring a new perspective to the situation, suggesting the arrests were linked to a legitimate threat. This contrasts sharply with the union’s narrative of wrongful imprisonment for voicing dissent against Moove’s pricing policies.
