AUATON Accuses E-Mobility Giant Moove of Unlawful Arrest and Torture of Opposing Drivers
The Lagos State council of the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has leveled serious allegations against the prominent e-mobility company, Moove. According to a petition by state council chairman Comrade Jaiyesimi Azeez, Moove is accused of orchestrating the unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of two drivers who challenged the company’s operational practices and alleged abuse of authority within the Nigerian app-based transport sector. These accusations highlight growing tensions between transport unions and technology platforms in the evolving African tech landscape.
Allegations of Driver Mistreatment and Unjust Detention
The union’s petition details a disturbing incident involving drivers Moses Ameh and Byang Zakka. It is alleged that these individuals were apprehended by officers from the Bar Beach Police Station, reportedly acting on instructions from Moove officials. Following their arrest, the drivers were subjected to torture and coerced into signing pre-prepared statements. They were subsequently transferred to the Ikoyi correctional centre, where they remained incarcerated for an entire month without any formal legal process. AUATON stresses that the arrests lacked any valid warrant, court order, or the presentation of formal charges, making their detention entirely unlawful. The union further points to the involvement of Moove Africa officials and certain Legion officers in facilitating these arrests, underscoring a coordinated effort to suppress dissent among drivers.
These allegations by AUATON against Moove paint a grim picture of potential exploitation and human rights abuses within the rapidly expanding app-based transportation industry in Nigeria. The accusations underscore the urgent need for robust regulatory frameworks and transparent accountability mechanisms to protect the rights of drivers and ensure fair operating practices by e-mobility companies. The case calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the veracity of these claims and uphold justice for affected individuals in the dynamic African tech environment.
