Ghana to Embrace Crypto: Legalisation and Regulation by December 2025

Ghana is poised to dramatically shift its stance on digital assets, with plans to legalise and regulate cryptocurrencies by December 2025. This move signifies a significant policy change, moving away from past hesitation towards a more proactive approach to the burgeoning crypto landscape. This decision underscores Ghana’s increasing alignment with other African nations actively seeking to establish regulatory frameworks for digital assets.

The Road to Regulation: A Swift Turnaround

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Johnson Asiama, revealed this crucial development during the International Monetary Fund’s annual meetings held in Washington. He confirmed that a draft bill is already being prepared for parliamentary review, aiming for a fully operational legal and regulatory framework by the end of 2025. Asiama highlighted the intensive preparatory work undertaken over the past four months, emphasizing the BoG’s commitment to creating a comprehensive regulatory environment and formalising the oversight of digital assets. This announcement followed the recent passage of Kenya’s Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill, intensifying the need for Ghana to act swiftly in order to remain competitive in the region’s rapidly evolving crypto ecosystem.

The forthcoming legalisation and regulation of crypto assets by Ghana represents a critical step forward, potentially boosting its digital economy and opening doors to new investment opportunities. This move will also provide much-needed clarity and security for Ghanaian citizens and businesses engaging with cryptocurrencies, fostering greater trust and encouraging wider adoption.
