AI Integration in Africa: Why 84% of Businesses Fail Due to Management Vision
The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in African businesses faces significant hurdles, with a staggering 84% of companies failing to successfully integrate it. This challenge is highlighted by a recent webinar hosted by Acadys France, featuring Cameroonian expert Jean-Jacques Essome Bell, who provided a pragmatic framework for integrating AI within an African context. The core message is clear: without proper initial assessment and managerial oversight, AI projects are destined to stumble. A cited study of 302 Cameroonian businesses underscores the severity of the problem, revealing that only 16% conduct an ex-ante analysis of AI use cases, and a mere 1% truly evaluate the impact post-deployment.
The Critical Role of Diagnostic and Management in AI Adoption
The webinar, “Leading the Integration and Adoption of AI in Business,” was led by Jean-Yves Arias of ACADYS France, with Jean-Jacques ESSOME BELL, a business management, data science, and AI consultant and entrepreneur, as the presenter. Bell, also the author of the “Vulgarization of AI in Africa” collection, including books for children and teenagers, emphasized the importance of a strategic approach. The primary obstacle hindering AI implementation, according to the study cited, is the absence of a thorough pre-implementation diagnostic. Only 16% of the surveyed companies initiated a proper assessment, leaving the vast majority to embark on AI projects without a clear understanding of potential use cases or anticipated benefits. The lack of post-implementation impact assessment, with a mere 1% of businesses actively evaluating results, further exacerbates the problem, leading to inefficient resource allocation and a lack of data-driven insights for future AI initiatives.
The lack of managerial vision and the absence of a solid initial diagnostic create a significant barrier to the widespread and effective implementation of AI in African businesses. Until companies prioritize pre-implementation analysis and post-implementation assessment, the vast majority will continue to struggle in their efforts to harness the transformative power of AI.
