MTN Nigeria Sets Sights on Connecting 8 Million Homes with Fibre by 2028

MTN Nigeria, the leading mobile network operator, has revealed ambitious plans to significantly boost broadband access across the nation. The company intends to connect a staggering 8 million homes to its Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, known as Fibre X, by the year 2028. This strategic move underscores MTN’s commitment to driving Nigeria’s digital transformation and bridging the significant connectivity gap that currently exists.

Broadband as the Foundation for Nigeria’s Digital Future

According to Egerton Idehen, MTN’s Chief Broadband Officer, the initiative directly addresses Nigeria’s under-connected status, where less than 2% of households currently have fixed broadband access. Idehen highlighted the crucial role of broadband connectivity in the modern age, stating that it serves as the “electricity of the digital age.” MTN’s shift from a traditional telecom operator to a technology company (TechCo) places broadband at the forefront of its strategic evolution. The company already boasts impressive 4G LTE coverage, spanning over 82% of the country, and was the first to launch 5G services in Nigeria. Building on this foundation, MTN’s Fibre X expansion aims for a significant increase in homes passed, with a target of 3 million connected homes by the deadline. This effort promises to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet solutions directly to Nigerian homes and businesses.
