Technology News: M-KOPA Achieves Profitability After Over a Decade in African Market

M-KOPA, the Nairobi-based asset-financing startup, has achieved a significant milestone, reporting its first-ever profit after over a decade of operations and expansion across Africa. This marks a pivotal moment for the company, which has become a closely observed case study in the pay-as-you-go business model within the African tech landscape. The achievement underscores the company’s resilience and strategic adaptability within the dynamic African market.

Financial Performance and Strategic Shift

According to recent filings in the United Kingdom, M-KOPA recorded a profit of KES 1.2 billion ($9.2 million) in 2024, a stark contrast to the KES 3.2 billion ($24.7 million) loss reported in the previous year. This financial turnaround was accompanied by impressive revenue growth. Revenue surged by 66% to KES 53.7 billion ($416 million), positioning M-KOPA as one of the fastest-growing startups within the Kenyan ecosystem. The company attributed its success to a continued focus on establishing a sustainable and impactful business model. Initially established in 2011, M-KOPA focused on providing solar home systems to low-income households on a credit basis. Over time, it diversified its offerings to include smartphones, cash loans, and various insurance products, thereby evolving into a comprehensive digital finance platform.

M-KOPA’s achievement demonstrates the potential for sustainable growth and profitability for African startups, especially those committed to innovation and adapting to market needs. This milestone signals a positive outlook for M-KOPA and other players in the African tech sector, reinforcing the potential for long-term, impactful business models.
