The German Language Hurdle
Ikwuka had arrived in Freiberg in September 2018 to pursue mining and remediation studies. While many of the courses were taught in English at universities like TU Bergakademie Freiberg, and Clausthal University of Technology, navigating the professional landscape required fluency in German. Despite his academic achievements, the need to communicate proficiently in the local language posed a significant obstacle to finding employment within the mining industry, which primarily operated in German. For someone coming from an African background, like Nigeria, this cultural adjustment could be very challenging. The language barrier thus presented a significant hurdle, pushing him to explore alternate career avenues.
The shift to the tech sector began when Ikwuka realized his limited German proficiency was hindering his job search.
