From Galamsey to Agriculture: Seized Water Pumps Given New Use
In a strategic move to combat illegal mining while simultaneously bolstering the nation’s food production, Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has transferred 1,000 confiscated water pumps to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. These pumps, once used for destructive illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, will now be repurposed to support vital irrigation projects for farmers across the country. This initiative underscores a creative government approach to turning the tools of an illicit trade into assets for national development.
A Legally Sound and Strategic Repurposing
According to Mamud Kabore, the spokesperson for the Minister of Lands, this action is part of a broader, legally grounded strategy. Speaking on Kumasi-based OTEC FM, he emphasized that the ministry sought and obtained court approval through the Attorney General before proceeding with the reallocation. This crucial legal step ensures the process is transparent and protects the initiative from potential legal challenges. Kabore further revealed that this repurposing model extends beyond water pumps. The Ministry also has plans to channel seized excavators into the District Road Improvement Program (DRIP), aiming to enhance Ghana’s road infrastructure.
