Ghanaian Students Win Global ICT Award for AI-Powered Deforestation Solution

A remarkable achievement highlights the innovative spirit of Ghanaian students. A team from the University of Ghana has secured the prestigious Green Development Award at the recent Huawei Global ICT Competition. Their winning entry, an AI-powered solution, tackles Ghana’s significant deforestation problem head-on. This recognition underscores the growing importance of technology in addressing environmental challenges in Africa and beyond.

Climate Sentinel: AI and IoT for Forest Protection

The winning project, “Climate Sentinel,” is the brainchild of Wisdom Nana-Abena Ogbonna, Ryan Nii Akwei Brown, and Jehoaddan Ebrah Andoh. Guided by their lecturer, Mr. Julius Ludu, the team designed this AI and Internet of Things (IoT) system to provide real-time monitoring and alerting capabilities for Ghana’s forest reserves. The motivation behind “Climate Sentinel” stemmed from a news report detailing that nine out of Ghana’s forty-four forest reserves had been completely overtaken by illegal mining activities. This alarming statistic spurred the team to leverage technology to combat deforestation, offering a proactive solution to protect Ghana’s vital natural resources.

The students’ achievement serves as an inspiring example of how young African innovators are utilizing their skills to address critical environmental issues, with the potential for significant impact on sustainable development.
