AfriGO: Nigeria’s Domestic Card Surpasses N70 Billion in Transactions in 2025
Nigeria’s indigenous debit card, AfriGO, has experienced remarkable growth, processing over N70 billion in transactions during the year 2025. This significant milestone underscores the increasing acceptance and widespread adoption of AfriGO by merchants across the country. The card is designed to transform Nigeria’s payment landscape and promote financial inclusion.
Driving Acceptance and Innovation
Premier Oiwoh, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), shared this update. He highlighted that AfriGO’s unique feature of enabling instant credit on point-of-sale (POS) transactions is a key driver of its popularity among merchants. This innovative functionality sets AfriGO apart globally. Furthermore, Oiwoh disclosed that over one million AfriGO cards have been issued nationwide, facilitating seamless cash withdrawals at ATMs and supporting both digital and offline payment methods.
In line with the Nigerian government’s goals to improve financial inclusion, AfriGO was launched in 2023 by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and NIBSS. The initiative seeks to provide access to financial services for the unbanked population, thereby contributing to economic growth within Nigeria. The rapid expansion of AfriGO represents a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria’s payment infrastructure.
