Moroccan SMEs Under Siege: Malware Disguised as Productivity Tools

Cyber threats are on the rise across Africa, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Morocco are facing a particularly acute risk. Recent data from the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), gathered between January and April 2025, paints a concerning picture of increasing attacks targeting these businesses. Cybercriminals are cleverly concealing malware and potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) within the guise of familiar and trusted software, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Office, and Google Drive, to gain unauthorized access to SME networks.

Morocco Leads the Charge in Targeted Attacks

The statistics highlight Morocco’s vulnerability to these disguised cyber threats. Within the African continent, Morocco bears the brunt of the attacks, accounting for a staggering 41% of all unwanted applications targeting SMEs. Following Morocco is Tunisia with 24%, Algeria with 16%, while Senegal and Cameroon each represent 7%. Côte d’Ivoire rounds out the list at 5%. This data emphasizes the critical role Morocco plays in the regional cybersecurity landscape and underscores the urgent need to strengthen protective measures and cybersecurity training within the country.

In conclusion, the findings clearly demonstrate the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks targeting SMEs in Morocco and throughout Africa. The deceptive tactics employed by cybercriminals, who are exploiting the trust in everyday software to infiltrate networks, highlight the importance of robust cybersecurity strategies. SMEs must prioritize proactive security measures, including employee training and the implementation of advanced threat detection tools, to safeguard their valuable data and maintain business continuity.
