Zimbabwe’s Telecoms in Crisis: 1 Million Subscribers Lost Amidst 500% Losses
The telecommunications landscape in Zimbabwe is grappling with severe financial headwinds, as revealed by the Q2 2020 sector report from the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country faced a double blow, recording staggering losses approximating 500% while simultaneously shedding up to one million subscribers during this critical period. This alarming trend underscores significant challenges within the African telecom sector, particularly in an economy as dynamic as Zimbabwe’s.
Spiraling Costs and Consumer Backlash Devastate MNOs
A deep dive into the POTRAZ report elucidates the primary drivers behind these unprecedented challenges. Total mobile network operating costs for Zimbabwean telcos saw an alarming 220% surge, escalating from Z$5.1 billion in Q1 2020 to a formidable Z$16.1 billion by Q2 2020. Despite this, collective revenue for these operators did manage to climb by 46%, moving from Z$2.1 billion to Z$3 billion in the same quarter. However, this revenue growth was entirely overshadowed and effectively nullified by an Z$11 billion spike in total operating costs, which ultimately led to the reported 500% losses. Compounding these financial woes, the significant loss of subscribers directly followed widespread protests by a consumer rights group in Zimbabwe. These consumer advocates vehemently condemned the MNOs’ decision to hike call and data tariffs, indicating a direct link between pricing strategies, consumer affordability, and subscriber retention within the highly competitive and sensitive Zimbabwean market. POTRAZ, as the regulatory body, continues to oversee this tumultuous sector.
The confluence of ballooning operational expenses and a shrinking customer base presents a formidable challenge for Zimbabwe’s mobile network operators. As the sector navigates these pressures, balancing the need for sustainable operations with consumer affordability will be crucial for the future health and growth of the telecommunications industry in this key African tech market.
