Layer3 Powers Up WACREN’s AC3 Project, Boosting Research Connectivity Across Africa

Layer3, a leading African technology solutions provider, has successfully completed its role in the AfricaConnect3 (AC3) project by delivering a crucial core network solution for the West and Central African Research and Education Network (WACREN). This achievement represents a significant step forward in enhancing research and education infrastructure across the continent.

Fortifying Africa’s Digital Backbone

The AC3 project, backed by European Union funding through the AfricaConnect3 program and spearheaded by WACREN, aims to establish a cutting-edge digital infrastructure for academic and research institutions in West and Central Africa. Layer3 emerged as the winning bidder from an international competitive tender, securing the responsibility of providing and implementing the core networking and support solution across data centers in ten African nations, as well as in France. This solution is designed to scale WACREN’s network backbone to an impressive 400GbE. The deployed technology included Juniper MX and EX series devices, out-of-band terminal servers equipped with 4G LTE for heightened resilience, and measurement and cache servers.

Layer3’s contribution significantly strengthens WACREN’s ability to provide high-speed, reliable connectivity for research and education across West and Central Africa, fostering collaboration and innovation within the continent’s academic community. This successful deployment highlights the growing capabilities of African tech companies to deliver complex and impactful infrastructure projects.
