Port Reforms Hinge on Transparency, Not Just Expansion
Ghana’s aspirations to become a leading maritime hub in West Africa require more than just physical expansion of its port infrastructure. Industry leaders are emphasizing the critical need for transparency in port operations, alongside ongoing development projects.
Transparency as a Cornerstone of Maritime Success
Speaking at a maritime stakeholder forum focused on improving Ghana’s seaborne trade competitiveness, Minister of Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe highlighted how opaque processes, hidden charges, and general inefficiencies are negatively impacting investor confidence and eroding the nation’s competitive edge in the maritime sector. Represented by his deputy, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, the Minister stressed that predictability, transparency, and trust are as vital as efficiency in guaranteeing success. This call to action comes even after recent port expansion and digitisation projects, suggesting that infrastructural development alone is insufficient to address the underlying issues hindering Ghana’s maritime sector.
Ultimately, for Ghana to truly realize its ambition of becoming a dominant maritime force in the region, a concerted effort must be made to foster transparency and build trust within its port operations. Addressing these issues is paramount to attracting investment and enhancing competitiveness in the long run.
