Pennee, founded in 2021 by Gideon Adeyemi, Emmanuella Mejero, and Abolade Eniseyin, initially set out to revolutionize credit disbursement and perception in Nigeria. Having previously worked with small businesses, the co-founders were confident that they could improve access to capital within the burgeoning Nigerian market. Over the ensuing two years, Pennee successfully disbursed over $2.6 million to more than 50,000 businesses, a significant accomplishment in the African fintech landscape. However, this rapid growth highlighted specific operational challenges, prompting a strategic pivot.
Tackling the Complexities of Nigerian Lending
The success of Pennee’s initial lending operations revealed significant hurdles. A primary concern was loan repayment, where the startup encountered the innovative strategies of Nigerian borrowers. As Adeyemi observed, customers frequently circumvented traditional collection methods by moving funds across multiple accounts, requiring more sophisticated solutions. Another major challenge was efficient verification and onboarding. The process was often slow, contributing to higher customer drop-off rates. Facing growing credit risk and customer churn, the Pennee team decided to develop internal tools to address these pain points head-on, beginning with more robust collections and a stronger Know Your Customer/Know Your Business (KYC/KYB) process.
Pennee’s evolution exemplifies the proactive nature and agile approach of many African tech startups. By developing tools to tackle the challenges of customer behaviors, Pennee is now focused on building a robust technology suite, with the potential to reshape the lending environment for all stakeholders.
