South Africa to Introduce Digital Travel Authorization in October
South Africa is set to modernize its entry process with the implementation of an electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. Scheduled to launch in mid-October 2025, the initiative represents a significant shift towards a digital border control system, replacing the traditional visa process and promising to streamline travel for visitors to the country. The eTA rollout will commence during the G20 summit period. In its initial phase, the eTA will be available to nationals from select G20 countries. These initial eligible travelers include citizens of China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. Initially, access will be limited to summit attendees, with a subsequent expansion shortly after to encompass tourists from the same countries. Travelers will be required to apply for the eTA online prior to their departure; on-arrival applications will not be accepted. This online system aims to provide faster approval times and improved security measures, while also enabling a smoother integration with South Africa’s biometric border control systems.
