DStv Suffers Massive Subscriber Loss in Kenya Amidst Streaming Revolution

MultiChoice’s DStv experienced a dramatic downturn in the Kenyan market, losing a staggering 80% of its subscribers within a year. This significant decline highlights the rapidly evolving media landscape in Kenya and across Africa, with consumers increasingly turning to digital streaming platforms. The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) data reveals a substantial shift in viewing habits, impacting the traditional pay-TV sector significantly.

The Streaming Surge: A Changing Landscape

According to the CA’s findings, DStv’s active subscriber base plummeted from 1.19 million in July 2024 to a mere 188,824 by June 2025. An active account is defined by the CA as one with at least a subscription within the last 90 days. This downward trend wasn’t limited to DStv; the entire pay-TV market in Kenya contracted by 76.9% during the same period. Competitors like Azam TV also felt the squeeze, witnessing a 63.1% decrease, ending up with 30,095 subscribers. Zuku TV managed to retain a larger portion of its user base, but still saw a modest 1.6% decrease, with 252,051 subscribers remaining. This illustrates a clear consumer shift away from traditional pay-TV. This shift can be primarily attributed to consumers embracing digital streaming services and short-form content. Popular platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Reels are attracting audiences with their flexible content and user-friendly interfaces. MultiChoice’s repeated subscription price increases during this time, including a rise in the Premium package from $82 to $86, worsened the churn rate.

In conclusion, DStv’s significant subscriber loss in Kenya reflects a broader trend of digital disruption across Africa’s media market. The shift towards streaming and the adoption of mobile-first content consumption models present significant challenges for traditional pay-TV providers. This situation signals a need for traditional players to adapt and innovate to remain relevant in a rapidly changing entertainment ecosystem.
