Cassava Technologies to Invest $720M in Five AI Facilities Across Africa

In a significant boost for Africa’s technological landscape, Cassava Technologies, spearheaded by Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa, is set to construct five artificial intelligence (AI) facilities across the continent. This ambitious project, valued at $720 million, aims to solidify Africa’s position in the burgeoning AI sector while decreasing its reliance on external technological resources. The initiative underscores a commitment to fostering indigenous innovation and empowering African businesses and researchers with state-of-the-art AI infrastructure.

Sovereign AI Cloud: Fueling African Innovation

The project is rooted in Cassava Technologies’ “Sovereign AI Cloud” strategy. This strategic approach will allow African nations to locally host their AI systems, creating a dedicated ecosystem for technological advancement. According to Strive Masiyiwa, Chairman of Cassava Technologies, this initiative will scale AI infrastructure across the continent, thus offering African businesses and start-ups unparalleled access to the latest AI capabilities. “Our AI factory provides the infrastructure for innovation to scale, empowering African businesses, start-ups, and researchers with access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure. Now they don’t have to look beyond Africa to get it,” stated Masiyiwa. The first of these AI factories is already being developed in South Africa, signaling the immediate commencement of this large-scale investment.

This significant investment represents a crucial step towards bridging the digital divide and empowering Africa to leverage the transformative potential of AI. By providing localized AI infrastructure, Cassava Technologies is paving the way for a new era of innovation and self-sufficiency in the African tech space.
