Ghana’s MoMo Surges Past 25M Active Accounts

Ghana’s Digital Surge: Over 25 Million Active MoMo Accounts Redefine Financial Inclusion

Ghana’s digital financial landscape is experiencing unprecedented growth, with mobile money (MoMo) taking a central role in the nation’s economy. The latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) reveals a staggering 25.1 million active MoMo accounts nationwide, signalling a profound shift towards a cashless society and enhanced financial access for millions. This impressive figure underscores the deep penetration and increasing reliance on digital payment solutions across the West African nation.

Mobile Money Transactions Hit New Heights, Bolstering the Economy

The data for August 2025 painted a vibrant picture of mobile money’s economic impact. Transactions through MoMo platforms collectively reached GH¢354.1 billion, demonstrating the vast sums flowing through these digital channels. While slightly below July’s GH¢355.4 billion, the overall usage and adoption continued its upward trajectory. Furthermore, transaction volumes witnessed a sharp increase, soaring to 831 million in August, up from 778 million recorded just the previous month. This consistent expansion in both value and volume firmly establishes digital payments as a cornerstone of Ghana’s local economy. The BoG statistics also highlighted that total MoMo registrations have now climbed to an impressive 77.7 million, with the 25.1 million actively used accounts reflecting a significant stride in financial inclusion through easily accessible digital channels. Crucially, the mobile money interoperability framework has strengthened significantly, facilitating cross-network transfers valued at GH¢4.9 billion from 26.4 million transactions in August, further enhancing the seamless flow of funds across different service providers.

The sustained growth of active MoMo accounts and transaction volumes illustrates mobile money’s critical role in driving financial inclusion and empowering individuals and businesses across Ghana. This digital transformation is not only streamlining economic activities but also creating a more accessible and efficient financial ecosystem for all Ghanaians, paving the way for continued innovation and economic development in the region.
