MTN Nigeria Leases Spectrum from T2 Mobile, Reshaping Telecoms Landscape
MTN Nigeria Communications Plc is set to broaden its network capabilities through a new spectrum lease agreement with T2 Mobile Limited, formerly known as 9Mobile. This deal, which has been granted regulatory approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), signifies a pivotal development in MTN’s spectrum strategy. The agreement will see MTN Nigeria utilize essential frequency bands to enhance service delivery across the nation, impacting competition and customer experience within Nigeria’s vibrant telecom sector.
Key Details of the Spectrum Lease Agreement
The agreement involves MTN Nigeria leasing 5 MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz band and 15 MHz in the 1800 MHz band from T2 Mobile. This lease will commence on October 1, 2025, and span a period of three years. This new arrangement represents a strategic shift for MTN. Crucially, the agreement also marks the end of MTN’s existing spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Limited (NTEL), which is scheduled to expire on November 29, 2025. The expiring NTEL deal covered 5 MHz in the 900 MHz and 10 MHz in the 1800 MHz bands across 17 Nigerian states. Furthermore, the new arrangement with T2 Mobile is set to reinforce the existing national roaming agreement between the two companies. This roaming partnership allows T2 Mobile subscribers to access MTN’s infrastructure, particularly in areas with weaker T2 Mobile coverage, thereby ensuring more reliable connectivity across the country. This is crucial for enhancing the digital experience for millions of subscribers.
The spectrum lease agreement between MTN Nigeria and T2 Mobile is a strategic move that promises to bolster MTN’s network capacity and strengthen its presence in the Nigerian telecommunications market. This deal also reflects the evolving competitive landscape of the African telecom industry.
