MultiChoice Spectrum Licence Transfer to Canal+ Approved: A Major Step Towards Acquisition

The path for Canal+ to potentially acquire MultiChoice has cleared a significant hurdle. South Africa’s Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has officially approved the transfer of Orbicom’s electronic communications and radio frequency spectrum licences from MultiChoice to Canal+. This approval signals substantial progress in the ongoing acquisition efforts, allowing Canal+ to move closer to a full takeover of the leading African entertainment provider.

Icasa Greenlights Key Licence Transfer

Icasa’s approval, granted on August 28, 2025, but publicly announced on September 18, 2025, authorizes MultiChoice to transfer critical licences to Canal+. These licences encompass Individual Electronic Communications Service (I-ECS), Individual Electronic Communications Network Services (I-ECNS), and the essential Radio Frequency Spectrum licence. Orbicom, responsible for MultiChoice’s broadcast signal distribution, held these licences, making their transfer pivotal for Canal+’s strategic acquisition objectives. The I-ECNS licence is particularly important.

With this regulatory approval secured, Canal+ is now positioned to further solidify its presence in the African media landscape through a potential acquisition of MultiChoice. The transfer of these licences represents a crucial step forward in this process, paving the way for potential future developments and shifts within the African entertainment industry.
