Mauritanian Regulator Slams Telcos Over Persistent Poor Service
Mauritania’s telecommunications sector is once again under intense scrutiny as its regulatory body, the telecom watchdog, has issued a stern warning to the nation’s three primary mobile operators. Chinguitel, Mauritel, and Mattel are facing fresh criticism for their continued failure to deliver acceptable quality standards for both voice and data services, a persistent issue despite previous regulatory interventions and penalties. The findings were particularly damning, detailing specific performance issues for each operator. Mattel, for instance, demonstrated struggles with voice service quality in 24 cities and significant gaps in its 4G network coverage across 22 urban areas. Mauritel’s performance was equally concerning, with voice service inconsistencies noted in 24 cities, alongside even broader deficiencies in its 3G and 4G offerings. Chinguitel, however, recorded the most widespread failures, with service disruptions and quality issues observed in dozens of localities across the inspected regions. These consistent failures highlight a systemic problem in maintaining reliable network infrastructure crucial for daily communications and economic activities.
