Payble: Empowering Africa’s Smallest Businesses for Growth

In many African nations, the reality is that millions of individuals rely on micro and informal businesses as a primary source of income. This reliance stems from limited job opportunities, insufficient social safety nets, and a lack of accessible savings options. These ventures are often born not from entrepreneurial aspirations, but from the necessity of securing immediate sustenance. Consequently, these businesses frequently struggle to move beyond mere survival.

The Challenges Facing Informal Businesses in Africa

Data from the 2024 Moniepoint Informal Economy Report highlights the significant challenges faced by these businesses, particularly in Nigeria. The report reveals that a mere 1.3% of Nigeria’s informal businesses generate monthly profits exceeding ₦2.5 million ($1,500). The vast majority earn significantly less, often under ₦250,000 ($150) per month. The earned money is often immediately consumed by basic needs like food and family obligations. A lack of bookkeeping practices, resulting in a poor understanding of net profits, and ill-advised financial decisions that deplete working capital, are also common. This situation leads to a cycle of borrowing from friends, relatives, or predatory lenders, often without structured repayment plans, perpetuating debt and instability. This is a complex issue, influenced by factors like insufficient financial education, limited access to credit, inadequate infrastructure, and the constant pressure of day-to-day survival.

In conclusion, Payble’s efforts to build tools for Africa’s smallest businesses represent a crucial step towards addressing the systemic challenges that hinder their growth.
