Vodacom & ECDC Team Up to Bridge Digital Skills Gap for Eastern Cape Youth
Vodacom is joining forces with the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) to equip young people in the Eastern Cape with crucial digital skills, marking a significant step towards addressing youth unemployment in the region. This partnership aims to empower the next generation and foster digital innovation in South Africa.
Empowering Africa’s Digital Future Through Skills Development
Vodacom’s commitment extends beyond the Eastern Cape, with a broader initiative to close the digital skills gap across eight African nations. Partnering with industry giants like AWS, Microsoft, and Skillsoft, Vodacom aims to upskill one million young individuals by 2027. The Vodacom Group Digital Skills Hub, present in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt (Talimy), the Democratic Republic of Congo (VodaEduc), and Kenya (Industry Digital Talent Program), leverages existing e-learning platforms to cultivate digital literacy and enable Africa’s digital society. This initiative is particularly vital in South Africa, where youth unemployment remains alarmingly high, with rates of 62.2% for those aged 15-24 and 40.5% for those aged 25-34, according to Stats SA.
By providing access to digital skills training, Vodacom and the ECDC are investing in the future of the Eastern Cape and contributing to a more digitally inclusive South Africa. This partnership promises to unlock opportunities for young people, enabling them to participate in the digital economy and drive innovation across the region.
