Moove Drivers in Lagos Protest 100% Remittance Hike, Halt Operations

E-hailing drivers partnering with vehicle financing firm Moove and operating on the Uber platform in Lagos, Nigeria, have initiated a strike, effectively shutting down their operations. The drivers are protesting a drastic 100% increase in their weekly remittance obligations for the Suzuki S-presso vehicles they are financing through Moove. The core of the issue lies in what the drivers perceive as an unreasonable and insensitive payment structure imposed by the company.

Driver Grievances and Demands

The protesting drivers are demanding an immediate reversal of the substantial remittance increase. Speaking to Technext, several drivers confirmed the commencement of the protest, which is centered around the Maryland area of Lagos. They highlighted that Moove has doubled the weekly remittance from ₦56,400 to ₦112,200, a figure deemed unsustainable and unacceptable. A driver emphasized the unfairness of the situation, stating that the increase doesn’t come with a corresponding adjustment to the car ownership tenor and also raised concerns about some drivers not receiving brand new vehicles despite their financial obligations. This situation highlights the challenges faced by e-hailing drivers in Africa’s burgeoning gig economy, where balancing income with operational costs and vehicle financing can be precarious.

The protest underscores the growing tensions between e-hailing platforms, vehicle financing companies, and drivers regarding revenue sharing and operational costs. The outcome of this protest could set a precedent for similar situations within the African e-hailing landscape, influencing future negotiations and agreements between stakeholders.
