MTN Eyes AI Data Center Expansion in Africa with Global Partners

Africa’s largest telecommunications provider, MTN Group, is actively engaging with U.S. and European enterprises to establish a robust network of data centers across the continent. This strategic move, confirmed by CEO Ralph Mupita to Bloomberg, aims to significantly enhance Africa’s capacity to power advanced artificial intelligence services. This initiative underscores MTN’s commitment to bridging the substantial digital infrastructure gap that currently limits the continent’s participation in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.

Addressing Africa’s AI Infrastructure Deficit

The expansion comes at a critical time, as Africa presently accounts for less than one percent of the world’s total AI data center capacity, despite being recognized as the fastest-growing region globally, boasting the youngest population. This severe infrastructure deficit poses a significant threat, potentially marginalizing the continent in the fiercely competitive global AI race. In response, MTN is making substantial direct investments, including a flagship $240 million AI-focused data center project underway in Nigeria. To spearhead this ambitious strategy, MTN has established a dedicated unit named Genova. The company is currently in the crucial “commercial negotiation phase” with various potential partners, including specialized AI infrastructure firms, co-investors, and major hyperscalers such as Microsoft, with the goal of finalizing these pivotal deals within the current year. The overarching plan involves developing these state-of-the-art facilities and securing key tenants to utilize the AI computing capacity.

MTN Group’s proactive push into developing cutting-edge AI data center infrastructure across Africa, in collaboration with global partners, is a pivotal step towards unlocking the continent’s immense potential. By tackling the current capacity shortfall, this strategic investment is poised to foster innovation, support digital transformation, and ensure Africa’s vital inclusion and competitiveness in the future of artificial intelligence.
