Bolstering Food Security: Ghana Intensifies Cassava Virus Surveillance with CSIR

Ghana is taking proactive measures to safeguard its vital cassava crop against devastating viral diseases through a collaborative initiative led by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Crop Research Institute. Under the Central and West African Virus Epidemiology (WAVE) project, a critical training program was recently organized to empower agricultural officers with advanced skills in monitoring and detecting cassava viral infections. This strategic move aims to fortify the nation’s food security and protect the livelihoods of countless farmers who depend on this staple crop.

Empowering Frontline Agricultural Officers for Early Detection

The intensive workshop, held in Somanya within the Yilo Krobo Municipality, targeted Agricultural Directors and Extension Officers from ten key districts and municipalities across Ghana. Participants hailed from areas including Yilo Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo, Okere, Akuapim North, Akuapim South, North Tongu, South Tongu, Akatsi South, Shai Osudoku, and Ada West. Dr. Allen Oppong, Principal Research Scientist at CSIR and Country Director of WAVE Ghana, emphasized the training’s paramount objective: to significantly strengthen national surveillance systems. By enhancing early detection capabilities and improving reporting mechanisms, the initiative seeks to prevent the rapid spread of diseases, thereby protecting agricultural productivity and ensuring the economic stability of farming communities. The WAVE project itself, a crucial African tech and science collaboration, extends its vital operations across ten African nations, highlighting a regional commitment to tackling crop diseases.

This concerted effort by Ghana, in partnership with CSIR and the WAVE project, underscores a strong national commitment to employing scientific research and community engagement to build resilience in the agricultural sector. By equipping frontline agricultural personnel with the necessary expertise, Ghana is establishing a robust early warning and response system, crucial for mitigating the impact of viral threats and securing a sustainable future for its essential cassava production.
