Starlink Pauses New Orders in Lagos and Abuja Due to Network Congestion
Starlink, the satellite internet service provider, has temporarily halted new residential internet kit orders in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria, signaling growing pains in its expansion. The move comes as the network reaches capacity in these densely populated urban centers. Areas affected include key locations in Lagos like Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and Surulere, which are now designated as “Sold Out” on the Starlink website. This signifies that the existing infrastructure is struggling to meet the demand from current subscribers.
Waitlist Implemented for Prospective Users
For those residing in the affected areas, securing a Starlink subscription now involves joining a waitlist. Prospective customers are required to pay a deposit to reserve their place and will receive notification when additional network capacity becomes available. One resident in Chevyville Estate, Lekki, attempting to subscribe, encountered the message: “Starlink service is currently at capacity in your area. However, the good news is you can still place a deposit now to reserve your spot on the waitlist and receive a notification as soon as service becomes available again.” This strategy allows Starlink to manage demand while it works to improve infrastructure in these high-demand areas.
This isn’t the first instance of constrained access for Starlink users in Nigeria. Back in November 2024, the company suspended nationwide orders for a significant period of approximately eight months, attributed to bandwidth limitations. This current pause in Lagos and Abuja underscores the challenges Starlink faces in scaling its service to meet the rapidly growing demand for reliable internet connectivity in Nigeria’s major cities. The temporary halt highlights the delicate balance between expanding its reach and ensuring consistent service quality for its subscribers across the country.
