Alibaba Fires Manager Amidst Sexual Assault Allegations and Public Outcry

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group has terminated the employment of a manager accused of sexually assaulting a female employee, following a wave of intense public backlash. The company has also pledged to implement new policies aimed at preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

Details of the Allegation

The scandal erupted after a female employee posted an 11-page account on Alibaba’s internal network detailing the alleged assault. According to the post, the incident occurred on July 27th after her supervisor allegedly pressured her to consume excessive amounts of alcohol during a business dinner. The woman claims this led to a client engaging in unwanted sexual advances. She further stated that she awoke the next morning naked in a hotel room, with no recollection of the previous night’s events. Hotel surveillance footage reportedly shows her manager entering her room multiple times throughout the night. The employee also alleged that her superiors and the company’s human resources department failed to adequately address the situation after she reported it.

The case highlights the critical need for robust sexual harassment policies and reporting mechanisms within large corporations, not only in China but also across the African tech landscape where similar issues may be underreported or unaddressed. Alibaba’s response, while belated, signals a growing awareness of the importance of protecting employees and fostering a safe working environment. The effectiveness of the promised new policies remains to be seen and will be crucial in rebuilding trust and preventing future incidents.
