Government Boosts Honey Quality Control to Re-enter EU Market
The government has committed to improving the quality control measures applied to domestically produced honey in a bid to regain access to the profitable European Union (EU) market. This strategic move aims to address past quality assurance concerns that have limited access to the EU for several years.
Enhanced Testing Capacity for Global Competitiveness
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has announced plans to acquire state-of-the-art equipment for residue deposit testing. This investment is crucial to ensuring locally produced honey meets stringent international quality standards. Officials are confident that enhanced testing capabilities will significantly improve the competitiveness of local honey and establish the nation as a reliable supplier in the global market. This initiative is outlined in MoFA’s Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) 2025-2028.
Industry stakeholders have responded positively to the government’s intervention, recognizing the potential for new export opportunities and increased foreign exchange earnings. By strengthening honey quality control, the government aims to unlock the economic benefits of the EU market and solidify its position in the global honey trade.
