African Startup Funding Dips in August 2025, Nigeria, Egypt & Kenya Lead
Venture capital investment in African startups experienced a significant downturn in August 2025, with a total of $93 million secured across the continent. This figure marks August as the second-lowest funding month of the year, surpassing only March, which saw just over $50 million raised.
August Funding Breakdown
The $93 million represents a steep 83% decrease compared to the $550 million garnered in July 2025. However, when contrasted with August 2024’s $56 million, the recent figures indicate a 66% year-over-year increase. A notable highlight is the dominance of equity investments, constituting approximately 75% of the total $93 million raised. This is a positive shift, especially considering that debt financing accounted for a larger share of the funding in July. Nigeria, Egypt, and Kenya emerged as the leading destinations for startup funding during this period.
Despite the overall decline, the increased proportion of equity funding signals potential investor confidence in the long-term growth and sustainability of African startups.
