Sousse Medina to Enhance Security with Facial Recognition Cameras
The historic medina of Sousse, Tunisia, is set to receive a technological upgrade in its security measures. Starting September 8, 2025, the municipality of Sousse will implement a surveillance system featuring advanced cameras equipped with facial recognition capabilities. This initiative aims to bolster the safety and security of both tourists and residents within the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Enhanced Surveillance System Details
According to Mourad Ben Salem, the Secretary-General of the Sousse municipality, the initial phase of the project will focus on installing four cameras at Bab Jebli and in the northern perimeter of the Ribat of Sousse. These strategic locations were chosen for their high foot traffic and historical significance. The cameras are designed to provide real-time monitoring, transmitting data directly to the municipal police operations room. Beyond facial recognition, the system will also track pedestrian and vehicle movement, gathering real-time statistics on activity within these key areas. This data will provide valuable insights for security management and resource allocation.
The implementation of this advanced surveillance system underscores the city’s commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and fostering a safe environment for tourism. By leveraging technology like facial recognition, Sousse aims to enhance security measures within its historic medina while preserving its unique character and appeal.
