From ‘Devil’s Box’ to Digital Blessing: Nigerian Churches Open Up to AI Innovation

While artificial intelligence often evokes caution and even perceptions of a “devil’s box” in some circles, religious institutions, particularly Nigerian churches, are demonstrating a surprising openness to its potential. Far from shying away, they are actively exploring AI’s capacity to enhance spiritual engagement and worship experiences. This evolving landscape is exemplified by pioneering projects like Dara Sobaloju’s initiative, which aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into sermon delivery, showcasing a remarkable adoption of cutting-edge technology within the sacred space.

Pioneering AI in the Sanctuary: Real-time Sermons and Interactive Ministries

On August 21, 2025, developer Dara Sobaloju sparked a significant conversation on X (formerly Twitter), outlining his vision for a groundbreaking Bible presentation AI agent. This ambitious project, now known as Pewbeam AI, is designed to project relevant Bible verses onto screens in real-time, precisely aligning with a pastor’s sermon content, including paraphrases and direct quotes. Sobaloju’s commitment to developing this system entirely in public, starting from that day, quickly garnered enthusiastic responses, drawing inquiries, constructive suggestions, and encouragement from pastors, fellow developers, and interested congregants alike. This innovative venture is far from unique within the region. Nigerian churches are increasingly at the forefront of AI adoption, demonstrating a readiness to embrace digital transformation. For instance, also in 2025, the Deeper Christian Life Ministry launched ‘Ask Kumuyi,’ an AI chatbot. This intelligent tool is specifically designed to answer congregants’ questions related to sermons delivered by its General Superintendent, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, providing an accessible, interactive platform for spiritual queries and deeper theological understanding.

These instances underscore a compelling trend: the strategic embrace of AI by Nigerian religious organizations. Rather than viewing AI as a “devil’s box,” these churches are recognizing its profound capacity to deepen understanding, streamline worship, and foster greater community engagement. By leveraging technologies like real-time sermon assistants and interactive chatbots, they are not only modernizing their spiritual practices but also demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to faith. This ensures that timeless spiritual teachings remain relevant and accessible in an increasingly digital world, marking a significant and dynamic chapter in the intersection of technology and religion.
