Digital Reforms Poised to Unlock Billions for Ghana’s Economy: GSMA Report

A new report unveiled at the GSMA’s Digital Africa Summit in Ghana highlights the transformative potential of digital reforms for the nation’s economy. The report, released by the mobile industry body, suggests that strategic adoption of digital technologies could solidify Ghana’s position as a leading digital hub in West Africa, unlocking billions in economic value.

# The Untapped Potential of Digital Adoption

While Ghana boasts an impressive 99% 4G coverage, a significant 62% usage gap persists, indicating that millions of Ghanaians have access to mobile internet but are not actively using it. Currently, the mobile industry contributes 8% of Ghana’s GDP, amounting to GHS 94 billion. The GSMA report estimates that focused digital initiatives could elevate mobile internet usage to 20.6 million unique users by 2029, a substantial increase from the current 13.1 million. This growth could have a significant impact on various sectors, particularly agriculture, where precision farming and digital market platforms could add GHS 10.5 billion to the economy, generate 190,000 jobs, and improve smallholder yields by 10-20%. Similarly, in manufacturing, the adoption of IoT and AI technologies could generate an additional GHS 15 billion, especially in key industries like cocoa and gold processing.

In conclusion, the GSMA’s report underscores the critical role of targeted digital reforms in unlocking Ghana’s economic potential. By addressing the mobile internet usage gap and promoting digital adoption across key sectors like agriculture and manufacturing, Ghana can leverage technology to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
