Ghana Enterprises Agency and Japan SME Agency Forge Partnership to Bolster MSMEs
Ghana’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of its micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has been strengthened through a new collaboration. The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) engaged in bilateral discussions with the Japan Small and Medium Enterprises Agency during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), which took place from August 20 to 22, 2025. This partnership, facilitated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), aims to provide critical support to Ghanaian MSMEs.
Key Areas of Collaboration: Financing, Capacity Building, and Technology
The discussions between GEA and the Japan SME Agency centered on three primary areas: securing financing for MSMEs, developing the capabilities of small businesses and service providers, and utilizing technology to enable Ghanaian enterprises to thrive in regional and global markets. The partnership recognizes the importance of financial access for MSME growth, alongside robust training and the adoption of relevant technological solutions. This support is particularly crucial in the African context, where technology adoption can significantly improve operational efficiency, access to markets, and overall competitiveness. The Ghanaian delegation was led by Margaret Ansei, the Chief Executive Officer of GEA, and supported by Professor Nathaniel Bosso, the Chairman of the GEA Board. Senior officials from Japan’s SME Agency represented Japan in the talks, with UNIDO Deputy Director-General, Yuko Yasunaga, facilitating the discussions. This collaboration signifies a commitment to supporting African businesses, particularly through technology transfer and financial assistance.
The GEA-Japan SME Agency partnership represents a crucial step in the advancement of Ghana’s MSMEs. This will lead to a stronger MSME sector.
