President Mahama Launches ‘Yeridua’ Project to Boost Ghana’s Vegetable Sector and Farmer Incomes

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Vegetable Development Project, a strategic initiative designed to revolutionise Ghana’s agricultural sector. Unveiled in Kukuom in the Ahafo region on Thursday, November 27, 2025, the project, also called ‘Yeridua’, serves as a crucial component of the wider Feed Ghana Agricultural Transformation Agenda (2025-2028). The core objectives of this program are to drastically reduce the nation’s dependence on imported vegetables while simultaneously boosting the incomes of local farmers, fostering greater economic self-sufficiency.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Agricultural Transformation

The ‘Yeridua’ project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, outlines a comprehensive plan to modernize and support the vegetable sub-sector from farm to market. A key focus will be the introduction of climate-smart technologies and superior seed varieties to enhance crop yields and resilience. This will be complemented by the implementation of sustainable irrigation management techniques to ensure year-round production. To overcome market challenges, the initiative will establish structured marketing arrangements and guaranteed off-takes, providing farmers with a reliable market and stable pricing for their produce. The plan also includes significant investment in vital infrastructure, such as cold chain and packhouse facilities, to reduce post-harvest losses. Emphasizing inclusive growth, ‘Yeridua’ will provide capacity-building opportunities for women-led businesses and young entrepreneurs in agriculture. Furthermore, the project aims to forge strong linkages with processing industries to encourage value addition, ensuring more economic benefits remain within Ghana.

At the launch, President Mahama emphasized the significant economic potential of the vegetable sector, highlighting it as one of the most profitable areas in agriculture. He noted that its labour-intensive nature and short cropping cycles support rapid income generation and create valuable employment opportunities. The ‘Yeridua’ initiative is therefore positioned as a vital step towards enhancing food security, empowering farming communities, and building a more robust and sustainable agricultural economy for the nation.
