TETFund Launches Green Mobility Initiative with 240 E-Tricycles Across Nigerian Universities

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has embarked on a significant step towards modernizing and greening campus transportation across Nigeria. In a move set to revolutionize student mobility, TETFund has officially commenced the deployment of 240 electric tricycles, widely known as e-tricycles, to 12 carefully selected public universities nationwide. This pioneering project, which recently kicked off at the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG), underscores a commitment to sustainable transport solutions within the nation’s higher education landscape. This initiative is a core component of the Federal Government’s overarching E-Tricycle Deployment Programme, designed to enhance the daily lives of students while promoting environmental responsibility.

Driving Sustainable Mobility and the Renewed Hope Agenda

The rollout of these innovative electric tricycles is more than just an upgrade to campus transport; it’s a strategic embrace of cleaner energy and accessible mobility. Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, articulated the profound vision behind this initiative. He explained that the project’s primary aim is to furnish students in tertiary institutions across the country with transportation that is not only clean and affordable but also reliably efficient. Dr. Alausa further highlighted that this forward-thinking initiative aligns perfectly with President Tinubu’s ambitious Renewed Hope Agenda, demonstrating a practical commitment to national development. Emphasizing its immediate and tangible benefits, the Minister stated, “This is Renewed Hope in action – practical, measurable, and impactful for our students.” Complementing the fleet of 240 e-tricycles, the federal government, through TETFund, will also install 12 advanced solar-powered charging stations, ensuring that each of the participating universities receives one dedicated charging infrastructure. This integrated approach ensures the sustainability and operational efficiency of the e-tricycle fleet, showcasing a holistic commitment to green technology in an African context.

This initiative by TETFund represents a pivotal moment for Nigerian tertiary education, blending essential student welfare with cutting-edge green technology. By providing a clean, affordable, and reliable transportation network powered by solar energy, the project not only eases daily commutes for thousands of students but also fosters a culture of environmental consciousness on university campuses. It truly embodies a practical demonstration of the Renewed Hope Agenda, promising a brighter, more sustainable future for Nigeria’s academic communities.
